Hearing Aid Council

It is a requirement that any individuals must be registered with the Hearing Aid Council prior to dispensing hearing aids. It is a criminal offence for an individual who is not registered with the council to discuss in an oral form views to selling hearing aids.

Members of the Hearing Aid Council are required to follow the code of practice. This code covers such issues as:

• Dispensers must give the best possible advice at all times regarding hearing aids and their use.
• Dispensers must where appropriate inform the client if a hearing aid will not prove to be beneficial.
• Dispensers must have the relevant equipment to undertake correct testing.
• Home visits can only be made if agreed by the client or someone acting on their behalf.
• Before the client has entered into any commitment the dispenser must provide in writing the relevant information, such a costs, make and model, terms of trial etc.

The above is only a small selection of the codes of practice which members should adhere to.

Members are also encouraged to follow “Continuing Professional Development” (CDP) which aims to ensure member continue to maintain standards of best practice within the industry. Keeping up to date with changing technologies is one aspect of the CDP.
