A hearing test is necessary to check for hearing impairments. Some people do not realise that they have hearing impairment because they are either to young to realise or the impairment comes on gradually.
Some impairments are caused by damage to the nerves or brain caused by an illness or by very loud noise, or congenital defects. Other types of deafness are temporary, such as problems caused by a build up of earwax or glue ear.
Aging can also cause hearing loss, as the nerves that carry the sound to the brain die are not replaced. Deafness in the elderly is usually gradual and will often start with the loss of the ability to hear high pitched sounds.
The hearing test will determine if your hearing is normal, or if the hearing is impaired what the causes are. Once the causes have been identifies then treatment and support can be given.
Step 1.
The first step is to eliminate temporary causes, such as
• discharge
• bulging ear drum
• perforated ear drum
• object that might be blocking the ear
Your GP should be able to carry this stage of the test. You will also be asked about your symptoms, such as whether you have any pain, and when you noticed the hearing loss.
Step 2.
Once the above has been eliminated as a cause the follow test may be carried out to determine the extent of the hearing loss:
• Tuning fork. The tuning fork will be held in the air near your ear, to see how well you hear sounds that are transmitted through air vibrations. Next it may be held to the bone behind your ear to see how well you can hear when the waves are transmitted to your inner ear through the bone.
• Audiometry. This test consists of wearing earphones. Different volume sounds are played through he earphones and you will indicate whether you can hear the sound. Bone oscillator. A slightly different test can be used to test how well you hear sounds that are sent through the bone rather than the air. This uses an instrument called a bone oscillator placed against the bone behind your ear.
