NHS hearing aids waiting times.

Prior to the introduction on digital hearing aids the waiting time for NHS hearing aids were said to be unacceptably long, sometimes up to several months.

With the introduction of the digital hearing aid and the surge of demand for these hearing aids from both current users looking to upgrade from traditional hearing aids and new users has compounded the problem, potentially making waiting times even longer.

The Government has commitment to bring assessments for hearing aids within a six week target. However, having a hearing test within six weeks will be of little value if you then have to wait several months or more for the hearing aid to be fitted, when the test is likely to need repeating.

The RNID (Royal National Institute for Deaf People) estimates that approximately 500,000 people are currently waiting to have digital hearing aids fitted by the NHS.

The RNID also said:

"We remain seriously concerned about the capacity of the NHS to meet the Government’s aim of ensuring that no-one waits more than 18 weeks for a hearing aid fitting by the end of 2008."

There is concern that the push to meet these new timescales may result in a fall in the quality of the service offered.

More people are opting to purchase their hearing aids from a private vendor therefore eliminating the long waiting times that may be experienced when relying on the NHS.
